The best AI agents in 2026, compared

Updated · By the Nexus team

There is no single best AI agent; the right one depends on the job. For a governed AI workforce with per-agent budgets, approvals and a private company brain, Nexus. For connecting agents to thousands of apps, Zapier Agents. For self-hosted technical automation, n8n. For coding, Claude Code or Devin. For teams already on Microsoft 365 or Salesforce, Copilot Studio or Agentforce. For developers building their own multi-agent systems, CrewAI.

A note on bias

We make Nexus, so we list it first and you should weigh that. Every other entry is described from its own website, prices were checked on 17 September 2026, and we say plainly where another tool is the better pick.

1. Nexus: best for a governed AI workforce

Nexus is the management layer for AI agents. You hand out work in plain words; agents do it under per-agent budgets checked before the spend, approval gates that hold output until a person signs, and an audit trail over every change. Every agent works from a private company brain indexed from files on your own hardware, and a person can join a live run and take over mid-task. It also runs Claude Code and Codex as staff under the same budgets.

Pick it if you want agents doing real work without an open-ended bill or unreviewed output. Look elsewhere if you mainly need integrations with hundreds of SaaS apps (Zapier) or a framework to code your own agents (CrewAI). Company-brain search currently matches words rather than meaning.

2. Zapier Agents: best for working across apps

Agents built on Zapier's automation platform, so they can act in the thousands of apps Zapier already connects. The free plan includes 100 tasks and 400 agent activities a month. Best when the job is moving data and taking actions between tools you already use.

3. n8n: best for self-hosted automation

Workflow automation with AI agent nodes. The Community Edition is free to self-host; the cloud Starter plan is EUR 20 a month billed yearly. Best for technical teams who want control over where workflows run and do not mind building them.

4. Lindy: best for personal and ops assistants

No-code AI assistants for inbox, meetings and routine operations. Plus is $29.99 per user a month with 3,000 credits. There is no ongoing free plan.

5. CrewAI: best for developers building multi-agent systems

An open-source Python framework for teams of agents, plus a hosted platform. The Basic tier includes 50 workflow runs a month and a visual editor; beyond that, pricing is enterprise.

6. Claude Code and Devin: best for coding

Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent, included with Claude Pro ($17 a month billed yearly, or $20 monthly). Devin is an AI software engineer with a light free quota and a $20 Pro plan. If you already use either, Nexus can run them under per-agent budgets and approvals.

7. Copilot Studio and Agentforce: best inside Microsoft or Salesforce

If your company lives in Microsoft 365, Copilot Studio builds agents on that data ($200 a month per pack of 25,000 credits, or pay as you go). If it lives in Salesforce, Agentforce is included in Salesforce Foundations and paid use starts at $5 per user a month plus credits.

How to choose

  • What is the job? Coding, research, app-to-app automation and general business work favour different tools.
  • Can you cap spend before a run, per agent? If not, a loop can surprise you. See controlling agent costs.
  • Can a person approve output before it goes out? See approval gates.
  • Where does your company knowledge live, and does the agent keep it private? See company brain.
  • Is there a free plan you can test on a real task, not a demo?
