What is an AI company brain?

Updated · By the Nexus team

An AI company brain is a private memory of your business, built from your own files, notes and past work, that every AI agent searches before it acts. It is why an agent can write in your voice, follow your conventions and skip the questions a new hire would ask. The important choices are where it lives, who can read it, and whether it keeps itself up to date.

Why agents need one

A model knows the internet, not your company. Without a memory, every job starts with you pasting context into a prompt: who the customer is, how pricing works, what was decided last month. That is slow, it is expensive in tokens, and it is different every time.

A company brain turns that context into something agents look up on their own, so the tenth job goes faster than the first.

What goes in it

  • Documents and notes you already keep: specs, playbooks, meeting notes, READMEs.
  • Decisions and their reasons, so they are not re-argued.
  • What agents learned while working: a fixed bug, a customer preference, a better way to do a task.

Questions to ask before choosing one

  • Where do the files and the index live? On your hardware, or copied to a vendor's cloud?
  • Does it keep indexing when the app is closed, or only when you remember to sync?
  • Can every agent read it, and can you restrict what each one sees?
  • Is search keyword-based or semantic, and which file types are indexed?

How Nexus does it

The Nexus company brain is in early access (join the waitlist). It is indexed from files already on your own hardware and keeps indexing while the app is closed. Your files and your index never leave the machine; prompts still go to the model provider you use. Every Nexus agent works from it.

Honest limits today: search matches words rather than meaning, and PDF and Office files are not indexed automatically yet. Making the brain multiplayer, so a whole team and its agents share one live memory, is the next version.

Frequently asked questions

Is a company brain the same as RAG?

Retrieval-augmented generation is the technique: search a store, put the results in the prompt. A company brain is the product around it: what gets captured, how it stays current, who can read it and how every agent shares it.

Is my data used to train the AI model?

That depends on the model provider and plan. With Nexus, files and the index stay on your machine; the text of prompts is sent to the model provider you use, under that provider's data terms.
